--------
October 8, 1895.
Miss Maggie Fleming died in Harper hospital, Detroit, on Friday, the 4th day of October, after an operation performed for the removal of an abscess from her lung. The disease was of long standing, but it was thought she would recover after an operation performed in Alpena. They did not reach the seat of the disease, however. The doctors at Harper hospital said she could not live long as she was and there might be a chance for her after an operation. She lived only a few minutes after the operation and complained of pain in her back and asked for her sister, when the spirit took its flight. She would be 16 years of age on the 20th of November next. Her remains were brought home Saturday. The Rev. Mr. Long preached the funeral sermon on Sunday in the Presbyterian church. The remains were followed to the cemetery by a large concourse of relatives and friends of the bereft and stricken parents. She was the flower of the family and beloved by her schoolmates and acquaintances.
Gently, how gently, departed her breath,
No anguish or grief pervaded her breast;
Sweetly, how sweetly, she slumbers in death,
Wearing the smile of the pure and the blest.
Rev. Long's discourse was from the text, "She is not Dead, but Sleeping." There were more wet eyes and sympathy manifested in the congregation than I have seen in Haynes since I have been in the township.
Mrs. Joseph Ash of Alpena accompanied Mr. Fleming to Detroit with his daughter and Mr. Ash and Donald McKillop and Mrs. Belle Woliver of Alpena attended the funeral.
