Couldn't Find the Shaw.
The Sturgeon Point lifesaving crew made an unsuccessful attempt last week to locate the hull of the schooner John Shaw, which went to the bottom of the lake off Greenbush Nov. 13, 1894. The crew started from the dock at Greenbush and took a course 5 miles east half south, which was supposed to be about the location of the sunken vessel. They cruised around at that point and took frequent soundings of the depth of water. The Shaw was supposed to 12 fathoms deep, but frequent soundings disclosed a depth of but 62 to 71 feet and no water of a depth of 12 fathoms was found. The attempt to find the Shaw was abandoned after several hours of fruitless search.
The crew reached the conclusion that the only way to find the hull is by employing two tugs to drag the bottom with a mile or so of line.
The Shaw was loaded with coal. Vessel and cargo were valued at $13,210.
