Soldiers' and Sailors' Graves in Alcona County Will Soon be Properly Marked
--------
Geo. W. Colwell has just realized the first fruits in his endeavors to get headstones for the graves of soldiers and sailors buried in the cemeteries of Alcona County.
The first stone to arrive is for William Lumbard, unassigned recruit 19th United States Infantry, who died at Alcona on June 10th, 1898. The stone is of the best American white marble, 39 inches high, 12 inches wide and four inches thick. The top is slightly rounded and the portion that will be above ground when the stone is set is hand rubbed. The name and service record is inscribed within a sunken American shield.
This stone is the first of twenty-eight that will be sent by the government to mark the graves of veterans buried in this county, thanks to the efforts of Mr. Colwell. The stones will be distributed as follows: South Harrisville cemetery 12, West cemetery 4, Catholic cemetery 4, Mt. Joy cemetery 3, Spruce cemetery 4, Curtis cemetery 1.
