Two Pioneer Residents Taken By Death

Joseph Miller passed away quietly in his sleep about 12:15 a.m. Monday at his home in Harrisville. He had been confined to his bed since May, 1942, when he received a broken leg in a fall. Only recently had he been able to take a few steps about the house each day. He was taken seriously ill about a week ago.
Mr. Miller was born February 23, 1863 in Toronto, Canada, the son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Miller. Two years later his parents moved to Port Huron, and in 1881 they came by boat to the village of Alcona. He married Martha Hastings on July 10, 1887 at Black River.
He operated a store at Alcona for some time, later moving to Haynes Township and in 1905 moved his family to Harrisville where he operated a meat market and general store and was a stock buyer through out the county.
Surviving him are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. L. R. Ross of Harrisville and Mrs. Austin Conklin of Alpena; one son, J. R. Miller of Detroit; 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. A brother, Ed Miller age 84, of Alpena, also survives and was present at the funeral services.
Services were held from the Harrisville Presbyterian Church at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday, Rev. C. S. Brown officiating. Burial in Westlawn Cemetery.
Acting as pallbearers were six nephews of the deceased: Wm. T. Miller and Ralph Miller of Haynes; Fred Miller and James Miller of Alpena; Henry Miller of Lincoln and James Miller of Harrisville.
