The County Poor Farm.
A visit to the Poor Farm of this county, last week, convinced us that things were going on well there under the management of Sup't Wm. C. Shepard. New improvements in the line of board fences, and otherwise, are being made upon the place. Since our last visit, we noticed that additions to the house and barn had been completed, and a hog house and granary built. In the way of crops there are now in the ground 15 acres of fall wheat, 6 acres spring wheat, 15 acres of oats and 3 acres of peas, besides a large field of as handsome clover as the eye could wish to look upon. All the crops were looking finely; especially would we mention the fall wheat, which is tall, heavy and handsome, and probably not surpassed by any other field of wheat now growing in the county.
Some new fruit trees (65 in number) were sent out last spring, making 93, mostly apple, now out on the place.
In the way of stock, there are 22 head of cattle (five milch cows), one span of horses, and numerous swine. At the time of our visit there were on hand in the barn, unsold, 425 bushels of wheat and numerous tons of hay, but we learn that the wheat has since been disposed of by the "Poor Fathers." During the past winter Mr. Shepard succeeded in clearing 12 acres more of land, so that the farm now has a total of 135 acres available for crops. Judging from the work done, and the appearance of things upon the farm, we should say that the county has no reason for fault finding with Mr. Shepard. He is looking well to the best interests of the farm, keeping things in place. The Superintendents also are worthy of commendation for the close attention paid to this flourishing piece of county property.
