Ed Gauthro Behind the Bars for the Murder of Jacob Kline.
--------
Another exciting event that happened at Au Sable last week was a saloon row in which Jacob Kline received a blow from Ed. Gauthro which resulted in Kline's death from hemorrhage.
Kline and Ed. Gauthro, the latter well known as an ugly and vicious fellow when drunk, met in Fred Welch's saloon early Sunday morning. They had some words, but no blows, and Kline started to go out the back door. He was followed by Gauthro, who struck him in the face when he reached the step. Kline fell from the step and in falling struck his head on a plank. Failing to get up he was dragged into the saloon, where he lay in an unconscious condition until Sunday evening, when Dr. Hovis and Dr. Cattanash were called. Kline was removed to his home near by, where examination revealed that a blood vessel had been ruptured and hemorrhage inside of the skull had resulted, causing a pressure upon the brain, resulting in congestion. Kline lingered in a comatose condition until Friday evening, when he passed away without having once regained consciousness. He leaves a wife and three small children, for whom provision is made by a $2,000 policy in the Maccabees. On Monday Gauthro was arraigned before Justice Cosgrove on a charge of murder. He waived examination and was bound over to the circuit court without bail.
