The life-saving department, at Washington, says the service given by the men in the great lakes stations, is the best in the history of the life saving service. The storms on the lakes are the worst known to the department, and the work of the men the most daring--They are frequently called upon to go long distances to save life and property. There are cases on record where the great lakes life saving crews have gone forty to fifty miles in answer to a signal of distress. There is one case where the men traveled 110 miles and saved every person on the wrecked craft. Taking this all in all and the fact that the men are rated the highest on the records, the officials think they should receive the proper recognition and be placed on an all the year around pay roll. J. G. Kiah, of Sand Beach; E. E. Chapman, of Buffalo, and Chas. Norton, of Grand Haven, are at the head of the great lakes service, and have advanced grade by grade from ordinary surfmen, until they are now superintendents of districts.
