A Trip to Sturgeon Point L. S. S.
Starting on the steamer Cleveland about 8:30 A. M. (Sunday), we arrived in Harrisville at 10:50. As none of the boys from the station were in town on our arrival, we went to the St. Lawrence Hotel for dinner, and a good one we had. Web. Slusser, Ed. Woods and O. Mather, who had gone down to load some barges, joined us at the hotel. Will Holmes drove up in a two-wheeled "trap" just as we were going in to dinner, so we persuaded him to stay until we had dined. After dinner we called on Mr. Morrison, formerly of Alpena, and who has as neat a store as one will find anywhere. He does not complain very much about "hard times," so that is very good proof of the amount of business he does. About one o'clock the four of us started for the station in Will Holmes' "jaunting car," and soon finished the four mile drive. Captain Motley proceeded to show us around the station and lighthouse, and we must say that the station is a model of neatness. Supt. Kiah's report says that the Sturgeon Point station has the finest painted floor in the district, and as that work is all done by the crew, it is certain the boys take pride in their station and are always ready to welcome visitors. They certainly did all in their power to have us enjoy ourselves while there, and when leaving extended a cordial invitation for us to "come down and clean 'em out again." The boys do not have all play by any means. They have a four mile beat to patrol every night, besides regular drill every day, and all the work there is extra around the grounds that are enclosed, such as planting shade trees, building breakwaters, etc. The boys take some of the Detroit papers and always welcome the Journal every Monday. We boarded the Mackinac about eight o'clock, and found among her passengers a number of Alpena folks returning home. The Mackinac made good time on her way up, and we arrived in Alpena again at 10:20. The trip is one we shall long remember with pleasure, and one we hope some time to repeat.--(J. J.
