A shortage of funding threatens the LSS schedule.
Money Makes the Mare Go..
Orders have been received by the various life saving stations on the upper lakes that they will not go into commission before May 1. This order is about as palatable to the "boys" as cold pancakes are in mid-winter to a hungry man, and some of them would throw up their jobs for a son. $50 a month for six months and board yourself for twelve is neither pleasant nor profitable even if Uncle Sam is the paymaster. The loose screw in this case is located at Washington. The national lawmakers appropriated a vast deal of money last season for many purposes but they slighted the life saving service. A shortage in the visible supply of cash is, therefore, the reason why the life savers will not go on the pay rolls until May 1. The first order may be countermanded but it is not likely.
Later--Capt. Henderson received the welcome intelligence Tuesday morning that his station is ordered into commission on the 15th of April.
