REQUIESCAT IN PACE.
--------
Mrs. Bernard P. Cowley died at her home in this village Monday, Feb. 2, at 4 o'clock p.m. after a brief illness of one week from heart trouble and malaria.
Deceased was in her usual health until Monday, Jan. 26, when she attended the Gill-Johnstone entertainment given at the town hall in the evening. She was taken suddenly ill during the evening and had to be assisted from the hall. She was taken home and medical assistance summoned. Drs. Henryes and Tiffany attended her and a trained nurse was also in attendance, but their efforts were in vain, and the patient passed away as above stated, having been unconscious a great portion of the time since first taking to her bed.
Helen C. Gates was born at Savona, New York in the year 1843 and at the time of her death was 59 years, one month and two days old. At the age of 23 she was married at Corning, N. Y., to Bernard P. Cowley, who preceded her in death in October, 1901. In the spring of 1873 Mr. and Mrs. Cowley came to Harrisville and resided here continuously during the remainder of their lives. They gradually rose to social and business prominence in the town and county and for years were identified with many important enterprises. Of late years Mrs. Cowley had managed the property and by the exercise of good business judgment had succeeded in bringing her affairs out of the chaotic state into which they had been thrown by business reverses. She will be greatly missed in this community.
Four children survive, namely John H. Cowley of Toledo, Mrs. Marie C. Schreiber of Bay City, Frank G. and Lillian C. Cowley of Harrisville, all of whom are here.
The funeral services were held this morning from St. Ann's church, of which deceased was a devout member. The remains were placed in the new family vault at the Catholic cemetery, whither they were followed by a large number of friends. The pall bearers were Messrs. Robert Walker, Chas. Conklin, D. McGregor, Thos. Stone, Geo. LaChapelle, Wm. Gillespie, Wm. Hugell, Jos. Yuill.
