Speaking of open winters, the "oldest inhabitant" of a neighboring town is quoted as saying: "In the winter of 1832 I went to school from December until March barefoot, with nothing on but linen pants and a cotton shirt. And it was so hot sometimes during recess that I took off my shirt. In that winter on Christmas day I picked eight quarts of strawberries in a field opposite my father's house in the town of Mikado, and I very nearly had a sun-stroke. I slept all winter 'thout no bed-clothes, and the skeeters bit fearful!"
