CURTIS PIONEER DEAD.
--------
Mrs. E. M. Barker Died Thursday, February 1, at Au Sable.
--------
Mrs. Mary Ann Barker, wife of Mr. Eli M. Barker, the well known and highly respected citizen of Curtis township, died last Thursday afternoon at ten minutes after two o'clock, at Au Sable, where she had been taken to receive treatment. The following sketch of the deceased is taken from the Oscoda Press:
"Mrs. Barker was born in the Province of Ontario, Canada, but has spent the greater part of her life at Lott, or the 'Barker Settlement,' as it was formerly known. For a number of years past, the symptoms of the diseases from which death occurred have been more or less alarming but within the past month the severity of the attacks caused Dr. Fitzgerald, the physician in attendance, to request a removal to Au Sable for convenience in treatment. Finally the conditions became so serious that a consultation of doctors was called, but nothing could be done and friends and relatives at Lott were summoned to Mrs. Barker's bedside.
"Mr. and Mrs. Barker are well known in Oscoda and Au Sable. They at one time resided here. About twenty-five years ago, before the line of the A. S. & N. W. went in, their home in Lott was the stopping place for a stage line from Au Sable to Mio and Mrs. Barker's fame as a first class cook was high among the many lumbermen who passed up and down the Au Sable river, and because of their generous hospitality and sterling qualities both Mr. and Mrs. Barker have a great many friends scattered over the world who once discussed the topics of the day over their well spread table and who will hear with keen regret of Mrs. Barker's death.
"There are in the family two sons and a daughter. The remians were taken back to Lott for interment."
--------
The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Lott, and were conducted by Rev. A. E. Thornley, pastor of the Oscoda M. E. church.
Besides her invalid husband, deceased is survived by four brothers, viz: William, Elijah, Delormy and Archie Deacon.
