Death of Edward Chapelle.
SUDDEN DEATH
--------
Edward Chapelle Expires Without Warning, Wednesday, Jan. 20.
--------
The community was shocked by the news of the sudden death Wednesday evening of Edward Chapelle, at his home in this city.
Death came suddenly and without warning. Mr. Chapelle had better health than usual during the winter, and on Monday was in the woods of Hawes township all day. He did not complain at all Wednesday and was preparing to go to the woods again Thursday to look up some timber trespassing. Just before he died he was conversing with his son, W. L. Chapelle, as they were waiting for supper. When the meal was announced Mr. Chapelle was the first to respond. Just as he reached the table he sank to the floor without a sound. Mrs. Chapelle and Walter reached his side immediately and did what they could to revive him, but beyond a wild fluttering of the heart there was no indication of life, and he died without regaining consciousness. Dr. Smith was called, but the stricken man was beyond human aid when the doctor reached his side.
Edward Chapelle was born at Carrolton Place, Ont. Feb. 23, 1840. His parents came to the States while he was yet an infant, living at Cleveland, Toledo, Monroe, and finally came to the Lake Huron shore about the year 1854. When the deceased was a boy of 15 years he worked for D. D. Oliver at Ossineke, and then acquired a liking for the woods that led to his adopting land looking and surveying as an occupation. He was county surveyor at the time of his death, and held that office for several terms prior thereto.
He was married August 26, 1864, to Elizabeth Beever, who survives. Three children were born to them, all of whom are living, viz: E. W. and W. L. Chapelle of Harrisville, and F. A. Chapelle of Duluth, Minn. There are also three surviving brothers, Geo. W. of Harrisville, Alfred of Alpena, and P. J. of Alden, Mich.
The funeral was held Saturday morning from the home, there being a large attendance. Rev. W. A. A. Shipway conducted the service, the burial taking place in South Harrisville cemetery.
