Black River, Aug. 5.--Hector C. McKinnon died Friday, August 1st, in McRae Hospital, Alpena, following a long illness.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Presbyterian church in Spruce, Rev. C. M. Boyce in charge. The burial service was conducted by Harrisville Lodge of Odd Fellows, of which the deceased was a member.
Mr. McKinnon was born Oct. 19, 1877, in Lucknow, Ontario, and came to Spruce, Alcona county at the age of 16 years.
Being physically handicapped for hard manual labor Hector took up telegraphy under Norman J. Oliver, then railroad agent at Black River and was soon acting as relief agent for the road. He was 29 years in the employ of the D. & M. and with the exception of a year of Harrisville and two years at Millersburg has been in charge of the Black River station.
In March, 1908, he married Mabel Gregg at Tawas City who with one daughter, Viola survives. Three brothers and four sisters also survive, namely John, Hugh and Lauchie, all of Spruce; Mrs. Jessie Richardson of Spirit Lake, Idaho; Mrs. Robert Geldart of Strathford, Ont.; Mrs. John Davis and Mrs. Edward Hoffman of Detroit.
On March 9th of last year Mr. McKinnon suffered a stroke of paralysis and since that time has been unable to attend to his duties as station agent except for very short periods. His daughter was deputized and under her father's guidance kept the office open until she became able to handle the work by herself.
Mr. McKinnon had many friends and few enemies. He will be missed in his home and community, where he was held in esteem by all and where the people share with the widow and daughter the grief they feel over their great loss.
