Alexander Cornelius
Dies At Hubbard Lake

Alexander Cornelius died at 3:30 a. m. Sunday at his Hubbard Lake home following an extended illness which became critical Wednesday of last week.
Mr. Cornelius was born September 27, 1873 in Gratton Center, Michigan, the son of Joseph and Margaret Cornelius. He lived in Greenville, Michigan during his early years where he grew to manhood. On April 28, 1892 he married Edith Moore at Entrican, Michigan. They lived on the west side of the state prior to 1902 when they came to Alcona County, settling at Hubbard Lake, where they lived continuously with the exception f four years (1916 to 1920) when they made their home in Lansing.
For many years Mr. Cornelius served as foreman with the Alpena County Road Commission and helped to construct many of the gravel roads in the North Hubbard Lake area. He was manger of the Frutchey Cattle Ranch for several years.
Surviving are his wife; four sons, Bruce L. of Lansing, Clifton A. of Holt, Milo A. of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Shirley W. of Port Huron; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Stewart of Mt. Clemens and Mrs. Beatrice Gerow of Hubbard Lake; two sisters, Mrs. Finch of Mason; Mrs. Naome Phelps of Chicago; a brother, Joseph L. of Hubbard Lake; sixteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren, and Erwin H. Farrar, who has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius since he was a young boy.
He was predeceased by a son, Edson B. in 1934, and a brother, Robert J. of Greenville in 1948.
Funeral services were held from the Hubbard Lake Methodist Church at 2:00 p. m. Wednesday, Rev. Glen Brooks, pastor of the Church, officiating. The body was at the Smith Funeral Home in Lincoln until noon Wednesday, when it was taken to the Hubbard Lake Church to lie in state until the hour of the services. Burial took place in Spruce Cemetery.
Pallbearers were eight grandchildren: Jack and Gordon Cornelius, Bruce-jr., and Eugene Cornelius, Hazen and Hubert Cornelius, Richard Stewart and James A. Gerow.
