Mrs. Etta Southgate, aged 94 years, and a resident of Harrisville for about ninety years, died at a hospital in Duluth at 10:00 a. m. Tuesday. She had accompanied her son to Duluth about a week ago and had withstood the trip well. Although she had been in ill health for about a hear, she was not incapacitated. She complained of not feeling well Monday and on a doctor's advice entered the hospital Monday night. Death was caused by a heart condition.
Mrs. Southgate was one of ten children of the late Robert and Sarah Beever, pioneer residents of Harrisville. She was born September 12, 1855 in West Bloomfield, New York, and came to Harrisville with her parents when a small child. She attended the local school in her youth and in 1876 she was united in marriage to Robert Southgate. Her young husband who was a carpenter by trade, had built a home for his bride, and they lived there throughout their married life. Mrs. Southgate sold the home to the Lance Haley's about one year ago. Mr. Southgate died in 1928.
She was an active and faithful member of the Harrisville Methodist Church.
Surviving are two children, Clifton Southgate of Duluth, Minnesota, and Mrs. Ernest (Nellie) Spencer of Harrisville; nine grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, William Beever of Bay City; and five sisters: Mrs. Emma Emerson, Harrisville, Mrs. Evaline Storms, Spokane, Washington, Mrs. Jennie Buchanan, Mrs. Alida Lund and Mrs. Helen Burt, all of Harrisville. Two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Chapelle and Mrs. Sarah Martin and a brother, George Beever, preceded her in death.
The body is being brought to the Smith Funeral Home in Lincoln today (Thursday) where it will be until 11:00 Friday when it will be brought to the Harrisville Methodist Church to lie in state until 2:00 p. m., the hour of services.
