Polio Proves Fatal To
Viggo C. Klein, Thursday

Poliomyelitis claimed the life of Viggo Christian Klein of Harrisville Township, Thursday, August 18th. Stricken with the disease on Saturday, it was recognized as polio Tuesday and he was rushed by ambulance to the County Hospital in Freeland, near Saginaw, where an iron lung was available. Paralysis attacked the respiratory system, and six days after he became ill, death occurred, at 7:00 p.m. Thursday. He was 35 years of age.
Needless to say, the death of this young man in the prime of life was a distinct shock to his family and host of friends in this area.
Viggo was born on June 3rd, 1914, at the Serradella Farm in Iosco County, the son of Otto and Astrid Klein. When he was four months of age, the family moved to Harrisville City, and later to what is now the family home, in Harrisville Township. He graduated from Harrisville High School in 1932, and attended Michigan State College for one year. Since that time he had been in the Dairy business, associated wit the father in operating Springport Dairy Farm.
On May 15, 1945 his marriage to LaJean Conrad took place in Harrisville. They purchased their present home, south of Harrisville and have lived there since.
He was a charter member and past president of the Harrisville Lions Club, and was an active worker in this community club. He had received his first degree in the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his bereaved widow and two sons, Christian Conrad Klein, age 3 1/2, and Karl Gene Klein, 4 months; his parents Mr. and Mrs. Otto Klein of Harrisville; one sister, Mrs. James (Ruth) Olson of Harrisville; and a brother, Lt. Otto Klein-jr., in the armed forces at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Private funeral rites were held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 20, at the Smith Funeral Home in Lincoln. Rev. C. S. Brown, Methodist minister, officiated, with burial in Springport cemetery at 3:30 o'clock.
Pallbearers were Lt. Otto Klein jr, James Olson, Lyle MacDonald, Grant Leonard, Earl Steadman and Gerald E. George.
Relatives here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Conrad of Plankinton, South Dakota; Mrs. Myrtle Conrad and Glen Conrad of Curran; and Lt. and Mrs. Otto Klein-jr. and daughter from Fort Riley, Kansas.
